Talking Heads
Aims:

- To make their visit to a public art gallery an enjoyable and memorable experience
- To introduce young visitors to the Clore Interactive Gallery, the art gallery building and key pieces in its collections
- To communicate ideas about emotions through discussion, drawing and through exploration of objects or art works
- To expand the vocabulary for describing their experience of emotions, interpretations of art works and 3D construction skills
- Each pupil will create a mask, which can be taken back to their school
What happens in a session:
- The children will have the opportunity to work with an artist to explore emotions and moods through discussion about their experiences and responses to the exhibits. Their findings will be further developed in a practical workshop.
- The emphasis will be on looking at pre-selected work, using a variety of approaches, including role-play
- The tour will be led by a gallery educator who will stay with your group throughout
Preparation:
- Before the visit discuss the value of directly experiencing 'real' objects through a gallery visit
- In the classroom, discuss the range of emotions that humans have and how that can be shown through the use of line when drawing
- Explain the reasons for no touching or eating in the galleries, i.e. for the protection and conservation of artworks
- Bring a minimum of 1 adult to 10 pupils and ensure that adults are briefed to be aware of their supervisory role and responsibilities for engaging the children
- Bring a bin liner or cardboard boxes to transport the masks back to school
Follow up:
- Produce observational drawings of the completed masks and explore mixed media techniques to develop pupils’ work
- Create stories using the masks as a starting point, imaging what the person wearing the mask might be thinking or feeling
